Everybody knows about the tooth fairy, she’s almost as important to children as Father Christmas is. Her job varies around the world but in the U.K. tradition dictates that when a child looses a tooth they must place it underneath their pillow before they go to bed. The tooth fairy then visits the child during the night while the child is asleep, and collects the lost tooth. Once the tooth has been checked – to make sure it belongs to the child who has placed it under the pillow and to check how clean the tooth is, the fairy will leave some money as payment for the tooth or will sometimes leave a gift. When a child looses their sixth tooth however, the fairy will sometimes leave the tooth under the pillow but will still leave money or a gift, this is as a reward to the child for growing strong.
The amount of money left by the tooth fairy does depend on how the tooth business is doing at the time but the current ‘going rate’ is anywhere between £1.00 and £2.00 per tooth. If the tooth fairy isn’t too busy dealing with millions of baby teeth a night they will sometimes give a special payment for either the first tooth to be lost or for the molar teeth, but like all businesses it depends on time available and current business rates.
Of course the tooth fairy sometimes makes mistakes and forgets to remove the tooth from underneath the pillow and will have to come back the following night, but she must be forgiven as she is so incredibly busy that little mistakes are easy to make!
The tooth fairy does like to receive letters from children who have lost a baby tooth and will often give those who have taken the time to write to her a certificate to show her appreciation; she also likes to give special tooth related gifts for some children who have taken particularly good care of their teeth!
All children should know that the tooth fairy has lots of tooth fairy friends all over the world, so if a tooth is lost while away on holiday she can arrange for a colleague to collect the tooth for her!
The most important thing for children to know about the tooth fairy is that she will only collect and pay for clean teeth, so lots of good tooth brushing is needed, particularly before going to bed!
